Body Image Distortion

How You See Yourself Affects Your Entire Life

Body Image Distortion or Body Dysmorphic Disorder results when one obsesses about perceived physical defects or flaws that are in fact, not observable or slight. A type of obsessive-compulsive disorder, this preoccupation, results in clinically significant distress or impairment of social, occupational or other important areas of functioning. Therapy provides insight into this disorder by combining or utilizing a cognitive/ behavioral approach. Positive “self-talk” and affirmations aid in the lessening of acute symptoms. It requires a reframing of what is believed by the individual to be true – and what is actually the case. As with other disorders, a food plan, exercise regimen and positive affirmations used repeatedly also lessen one’s distorted perception. The concept of ADEQUACY is highlighted; that is, the realization that one is “good enough” and does NOT require perfection. While we are formed in the image of Source Energy (what some may identify as God) is reviewed through therapeutic assignment, assisting in redefining one’s self-concept.

Self-concept is claiming what IS about oneself, NOT what ISN’T. The identification of one’s strengths and abilities, as well as acceptance of one’s physical appearance, is made substantially better through the use of positive self-talk, guided imagery/meditation and becoming a part of a group (therapy group or otherwise) so that underlying negative beliefs are brought into the here and now to shift into a more holistic and accepting Self.

Different survey/assessment tools lend themselves to a healthier outlook, notably one entitled VIA (VALUES IN ACTION) which identifies which of 26 character strengths can be utilized for a better Self-concept. This assessment tool was developed by Martin Seligman, resulting in what he has identified as “Well-Being.” This valuable assessment tool is utilized throughout therapy as foundational in developing Self-Care, ultimately in Self-Love.
